Education, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and IL-2 and IL-6 gene polymorphisms in the survival of head and neck cancer BJMBR
López,R.V.M.; Zago,M.A.; Eluf-Neto,J.; Curado,M.P.; Daudt,A.W.; da Silva-Junior,W.A.; Zanette,D.L.; Levi,J.E.; de Carvalho,M.B.; Kowalski,L.P.; Abrahão,M.; de Góis-Filho,J.F.; Boffetta,P.; Wünsch-Filho,V..
The association of education, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and interleukin-2 (IL-2 +114 and -384) and -6 (IL-6 -174) DNA polymorphisms with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) was investigated in a cohort study of 445 subjects. IL-2 and IL-6 genotypes were determined by real-time PCR. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of disease-specific survival according to anatomical sites of the head and neck. Mean age was 56 years and most patients were males (87.6%). Subjects with 5 or more years of schooling had better survival in larynx cancer. Smoking had no effect on HNSCC survival, but alcohol consumption had a statistically significant effect on larynx cancer. IL-2 gene +114 G/T (HR =...

Evaluation of electrosurgery and titanium clips for ovarian pedicle haemostasis in video-assisted ovariohysterectomy with two portals in bitches Ciência Rural
Guedes,Rogério Luizari; Souza,Fernando Wiecheteck de; Freitas,Gabrielle Coelho; Gomes,Cristiano; Castro,Jorge Luiz Costa; Marconato,Francieli; Castro,Verônica Souza Paiva; Pippi,Ney Luis; Dornbusch,Peterson Triches.
ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the use of bipolar electrosurgery and laparoscopic clipping, and their effects on blood loss and the inflammatory response, during a two portal video-assisted ovariohysterectomy technique (two groups with 10 animals each). Surgical time and blood loss volume were significantly lower in the electrosurgery group. There were no significant changes in haematocrit between groups; however, haematocrit did differ between evaluated times, and decreased 10% from the initial measurement to four hours after the procedure. The inflammatory response was significantly higher throughout the post-surgical period, but without any different clinical signs between the two groups. Both techniques had good application for the two portal...

Evaluation of Glucosamine and Snail Mucin on the Progression of Experimental Knee Osteoarthritis in Dogs International Journal of Morphology
Ajadi,Adetola R; Gazal,Oladele, S; Otesile,Ebenezer, B; Kasali,Olajide, B.
This study evaluated the effect of oral glucosamine and intramuscular injection (IM) of snail mucin on the progression of experimental osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs. Twenty adult mongrels with mean body weight (12.4±1.8 kg) were used. Experimental OA was induced surgically using the groove model. The dogs were randomly divided into three groups following radiographic evidence of OA. Group one (control) comprised of ten dogs treated with normal saline twice weekly for four weeks following OA. Group two comprised of five dogs treated with 10mg/kg of oral glucosamine daily for four weeks. Group three comprised of five dogs treated with 5mg/kg intramuscular injection of 5% solution of snail mucin twice weekly for four weeks. Blood was obtained from the cephalic...

Gene polymorphism of interleukin 1 and 8 in chronic gastritis patients infected withHelicobacter pylori J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Caleman Neto,Agostinho; Rasmussen,Lucas T; Labio,Roger W de; Queiroz,Valdeir F de; Smith,Marília de AC; Viani,Gustavo A; Payão,Spencer LM.
Background : Epidemiological investigations have indicated thatHelicobacter pyloriinduces inflammation in the gastric mucosa regulated by several interleukins. The genesIL1BandIL8are suggested as key factors in determining the risk of gastritis. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the association of gene polymorphism of interleukin-1 and interleukin-8 with chronic gastrits inH. pyloriinfected patients. A total of 60 patients underwent endoscopic procedure. Biopsy samples were collected for urease test, histopathological and molecular exams. The DNA of theses samples was extracted for detection ofH. pyloriand analysis of the genes mentioned above. Patients with gastritis had a higher frequency ofH. pylori-positive samples. Results : H. pyloriwas detected...

Increased levels of IL-10, IL-12, and IFN- in patients with visceral leishmaniasis BJID
Khoshdel,A.; Alborzi,A.; Rosouli,M.; Taheri,E.; Kiany,S.; Javadian,M.H..
Visceral leishmaniasis remains a serious public health problem in developing countries. Cytokines have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this disease. We evaluated plasma levels of IL-10, IL-12 and IFN- in 32 patients with active visceral lieshmaniasis, in 29 siblings of the patients and in 23 normal individuals in an endemic area to look for correlations between the clinical outcome of infection and the plasma cytokine levels. An analysis was made with a skin test and a quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay. Data were analyzed with the Mann Whitney test and the Kruskal Wallis test. The cytokine levels were significantly higher in the patients than in the control groups. We concluded that normalization of the plasma level of IFN- can serve as a...

Partial purification and functional characterization of Ts19 Frag-I, a novel toxin from Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lima,Priscila C.; Bordon,Karla C. F.; Pucca,Manuela B.; Cerni,Felipe A.; Zoccal,Karina F.; Faccioli,Lucia H.; Arantes,Eliane C..
Abstract Background The yellow scorpion Tityus serrulatus (Ts) is responsible for the highest number of accidents and the most severe scorpion envenoming in Brazil. Although its venom has been studied since the 1950s, it presents a number of orphan peptides that have not been studied so far. The objective of our research was to isolate and identify the components present in the fractions VIIIA and VIIIB of Ts venom, in order to search for a novel toxin. The major isolated toxins were further investigated for macrophage modulation. Methods The fractions VIIIA and VIIIB, obtained from Ts venom cation exchange chromatography, were rechromatographed on a C18 column (4.6 × 250 mm) followed by a reversed-phase chromatography using another C18 column (2.1 ×...

Rapid accumulation of an interleukin 17 homolog transcript in Crassostrea gigas hemocytes following bacterial exposure ArchiMer
Roberts, S; Gueguen, Yannick; De Lorgeril, Julien; Goetz, F.
Interleukin-17 (IL-17) gene models have been found in the sequenced genomes of Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and Caenorhabditis elegans. However, there have been no published reports on the empirical cloning and characterization of any interleukin cDNAs in invertebrates. From a Pacific oyster (Crossostrea gigas) hemocyte cDNA library, two clones were obtained that encoded a protein similar to vertebrate IL-17s. The putative oyster IL-17 homolog (CgIL-17) was 27% identical to rainbow trout IL-17D, 21% to human IL-17D and 24% to an IL-17D-like gene model obtained from the annotation of the sea urchin genome. IL-17s from the oyster, sea urchin, trout and human, contained conserved cysteine residues found in all forms of IL-17 in mammals. Injection of bacteria...
